Construction of the Carillon Power Dam flooded a section of the town of Hawkesbury. The Maison de l’Île is the only remaining house from Chenail Island. In 1829, Thomas Higginson built the Tower as a windmill for grinding grain. The winds were not constant enough to power the windmill, so it fell into disuse. By the end of the 19th century, the tower was used for astronomical studies by Higginson family members and local students. The tower has been restored in 2006. A Climb to the top of the 52 feet tower enables visitors to admire the beautiful scenery.
Vankleek Hill
This small town, known as the Gingerbread Capital of Ontario is worth the detour. The numerous red brick houses are the heritage left by two former brick processing factories that were established in Vankleek Hill. Beautiful murals depicting life in the village were created by regional artists Elizabeth Skelly and Odile Têtu. Many cultural and heritage events are organized year-round by the proud residents and merchants of the village.
